That in France we call these "Frigo américain", or American fridge. While you guys guys call them French door fridges.

And we even call open kitchen (a kitchen with a bar opened on the living room), an american kitchen....

I have never heard this called a French Door fridge... This is a side-by-side.

they're only french doors if there's no central mullion or spine, see example.

We call them American fridges in Ireland. I always thought that was because they are very wide.

Interesting. In Finland we have ''jenkkikaappi'' or yank fridge and it looks different.

This would be a "porte vitrée".

This is what I would call a "side-by-side", because it's a fridge and freezer unit side-by-side (duh) and they're of unequal widths. French doors are of equal size, and as was mentioned by another poster, don't have a central pillar.

Perhaps it's "American" because it's a style that came from the USA, whereas the typical stacked design is more universal?

Bingo. the idea is that you can lay large dishes out flat inside the fridge flat.

We don't use a specific name. They're just fries, or Frites in French. It's like Belgian waffles, for us they are just waffles.

I've never heard anyone in America call that a French door fridge. They are most commonly called "side by side".
